Seaming Tips
- To reduce peaking,
stretch the carpet tighter in the direction
parallel to the seam, and less in the direction
perpendicular to or across the seam.
- To reduce seam
splitting and carpet wrinkling, be sure to lay
carpet over a firm padding when installing carpet
in heavy traffic areas.
- Always seam on a
hard surface, never seam on top of the padding.
- Do not seam
carpets with foam rubber, PVC or urethane
secondary backing by the heat bond method.

Recommendations for Carpet Seaming
- To reduce smoking and odors, keep seaming iron clean. Adhesive build-up can reduce the iron temperature by 100˚F.
- Seam location is
important. Run the seam towards the light source.
This will minimize the possibility of shadows
highlighting the seam.
- Prior to
installation test a sample piece of carpet. Be
sure the backing you are trying to seam is
suitable for seaming with hot melt carpet seaming
tape.
- Be sure the edges
of the carpet are flat before seam by trimming
both carpet edges straight and back-roll.
- Be sure all seams
are rolled immediately.
- Be sure the iron
has a heat shield to protect against excessive
heat transfer that can shrink and curl synthetic
backing and yarns.
- To eliminate
shading along the seam, seam in the direction of
the nap. Keep the iron moving at a steady rate.
- Be sure that the
hot melt is fully activated, and that you get
into the adhesive before it has time to cool.
- As the iron is
moving down the seam, guide the carpet off the
rear of the iron and press it firmly into the hot
adhesive and immediately roll the seam.
- Use a pull behind
weight as you seam, to make sure the carpet
backing does not pull loose from the tape before
the hot melt has time to set properly.
- Prior to
stretching with a power stretcher, allow enough
cooling time, approximately five to eight
minutes.
